Seat Belt Laws Focus of Law Enforcement in Bartow County, Georgia
BARTOW COUNTY, GA. – According to an online news report from patch.com, seat belt laws in the state of Georgia will be the focus of law enforcement officers in Bartow County through Memorial Day. Officers will be out looking for drivers and passengers who are not buckled up as part of the national “Click it or Ticket” initiative.*
The Click it or Ticket initiative kicked off on Monday, May 21, and will run until Sunday, June 2. Officers around the nation participate in Click it or Ticket every year, aiming to educate drivers about state laws and about the safety risks of going without a seat belt. Vehicle accidents can result in fewer injuries and fatalities when people wear their seat belts.
More than 10,000 people in the U.S. died in vehicle accidents in 2017 while not wearing seat belts, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. In Bartow County, Georgia, a total of 17 people were killed in vehicle accidents in 2017, and five of those victims were not wearing seat belts.
The traffic crash rates for Bartow County in 2017 were 9.41 fatalities for every 100,000 population and 4.76 fatalities involving unrestrained vehicle occupants per every 100,000 population. Vehicle accidents are a top cause of death for children and adults in the United States, and safety belts are a simple way to reduce the numbers.
Throughout the two weeks of the Click it or Ticket campaign, law enforcement officers in Bartow County will be watching for unbelted drivers and passengers. Officers will be providing helpful materials about the benefits of seat belts and will be writing citations as they see fit.
