Fatal Car Accidents in Georgia Down 7 Percent from 2018

May 16, 2019

GEORGIA – According to an online news report published by 13wmaz.com, fatal car accidents in the state of Georgia are down 7 percent from this time in 2018. The Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety credits a new law and active measures in the state aimed at reducing unsafe driving.*

Based on data from the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS), 521 fatal vehicle crashes occurred in Georgia from January 2018 to mid-May 2018. So far in 2019, 485 deadly vehicle accidents have occurred on Georgia roadways. This represents a decrease that shows real progress in the state, say officials with GOHS.

“Right now, we are 7 percent down from where we were this time last year, which is huge,” said GOHS Law Enforcement Services Director Roger Hayes. “That’s over 35 people that have been saved this year.”

Hayes said he and GOHS believe that a big part of the reason fatal accidents in the state are trending down is the Hands-Free Georgia Act, which went into effect last summer, and other initiatives state officials have taken to promote safe driving practices.

“It’s about telling people why it’s so important to not drink and drive, why it’s important to slow down. Just put down the phone,” Hayes said. “We believe that all those things combined with aggressive enforcement around the state, by our state and local partners, have made a big difference.”

Hayes reminds drivers that the effects of fatal accidents are far-reaching — families, friends, community members all feel the effects of a life lost to a car crash.
