Troopers to Georgia Drivers: Watch Out for Tractors on Roadways

May 13, 2019

GEORGIA – According to an online news report posted by walb.com, Georgia State Patrol Troopers are warning drivers in the state to watch out for tractors on the roadways. The warmer season means more agricultural activity and higher numbers of farmers out traveling on farm equipment.*

Drivers in Georgia have likely already noticed an uptick in farm equipment headed down city and county roads. It can be difficult to spot the slow-traveling equipment, particularly before sunrise and after sunset. Georgia State Patrol is providing some safety tips to drivers to help reduce accidents with farmers this year.

In 2016, according to the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, almost 550 accidents involving farm equipment occurred in the state of Georgia. Troopers say those numbers are rising, and both farmers and drivers need to travel with greater attention on safety. Farmers are especially vulnerable to injuries when these accidents occur.

Tractors can only travel about 25 mph, so drivers need to reduce their speed on highways, Troopers say, particularly on rural highways, and look out for farmers. Drivers need to be patient when they approach a piece of farm equipment, respect the space of the farmer, and only pass when it is safe.

Farmers also need to take care to ensure their equipment is properly outfitted with reflectors that will alert drivers. For optimal safety, Troopers suggest having a vehicle follow tractors on the roadways.

Lastly, Troopers urge all drivers to avoid distractions and wear seat belts. In the event of an accident, contact emergency services immediately.
