Doctors: Warmer Weather Means More Children Injured by Vehicles

May 08, 2019

UNITED STATES – According to an online news report from williamsoncourse.com, doctors are anticipating more children coming into hospitals with injuries from vehicle collision now that the weather is turning warmer. A significant number of children are struck by vehicles every year in the U.S., and the number ticks up during spring and summer.*

The Governor’s Highway Safety Association reports that thousands of kids across the country are injured or killed in vehicle collisions each year. In 2018, more than 6,200 children died after being hit by vehicles. That figure represents a 4 percent increase compared to 2017 and is the highest number of such deaths since 1990.

Purnima Unni, manager for the Pediatric Trauma Injury Prevention Program at Vanderbilt’s Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital, said the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital saw 44 children for traumatic injuries from being hit by vehicles.

“Over the last two-week period, we have seen four cases, including one death, that has resulted from either a car backing over a child or a child running into the street,” Unni said. “Warmer weather makes playing outside much more appealing to children. Unfortunately, this exposes them to an increased risk of injury.”

Unni says adults need to do their part to reverse the trend of child deaths. Drivers need to look out, and parents need to be aware of their children going in and out of the home, Unni said.

“In homes with toddler-aged children, supervision is critical, as this age group looks for every opportunity to go outside,” Unni said. “Adding door chimes will alert adults if a child has opened an exit door without their knowledge.”
