Electric Scooter Injuries Prompt the CDC to Issue a Warning
UNITED STATES – According to an online article published by wrcbtv.com, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a warning that electric scooter injuries are on the rise following a study that revealed many injuries are preventable.*
Most people have seen individuals operating electric scooters that are often seen parked on sidewalks when they are not in use. Many cities and college towns have found electric scooters to be a good alternative form of transportation. However, such scooters have become popular very quickly, with few, if any, regulations to govern their use. Because of the rise in the number of electric scooters present across the country, the CDC conducted a study regarding electric scooter injuries.
According to the CDC’s study, head injuries accounted for 45 percent of all electric scooter injuries, followed by upper extremity fractures at 27 percent and lower extremity fractures at 12 percent. The CDC’s study also concluded that the electric scooter injury rate was 14.3 injuries per 100,000 trips. The median age for individuals suffering from electric scooter injuries is 29, and a significant number of injuries were sustained by first-time riders. Additionally, many of the injuries resulted from accidents involving motor vehicles.
The overall outcome of the CDC’s study demonstrates that many electric scooter injuries are preventable, especially head injuries. Specifically, riders can choose to wear helmets, which can prevent or at least minimize the severity of head injuries resulting from an accident. Also, a lack of rules and regulations may be playing a role in the number of accidents, and with the implementation of clear regulations, many riders may avoid accidents that result in serious injuries.
