Georgia Officials Emphasize Dangers of Drowsy Driving
GEORGIA – According to an online news report published at 13wmaz.com,Georgia officials are emphasizing the dangers of drowsy driving. Recent studies have shown that drowsy driving can present just as much danger on the road as drunk driving, and officials want drivers to understand the risks.*
The Georgia Department of Transportation reports that more than 1,500 people died in traffic accidents in Georgia in 2018. A large number of these fatal accidents was caused by drivers who were distracted or driving under the influence. Another percentage of them was caused by drivers who were driving when they were too tired.
Research suggests that drowsy driving can be just as dangerous — and present some of the same forms of impairment — as drunk driving. Bibb County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Brad Wolfe says that drowsiness can have serious effects on a driver.
“It can make you less attentive to detail, less attentive to hazards that may present themselves, and your reaction time is slower,” Wolfe said.
The National Sleep Foundation says a person who has been awake for 18 hours is affected the same way as a person who has a blood alcohol level of .05. A person who has been awake for 24 hours is comparable to a person with a blood alcohol level of .10. The legal BAC limit for driving in Georgia is .08.
The Georgia Public Safety Training Center says that sleep loss can cause a driver to run off the road, enter another lane of the road, or crash into another vehicle or object. These are the same types of accidents law enforcement officers see with drunk drivers.
