Officials in Morgan County, Georgia, Differ with DOT on Intersection Solutions
MORGAN COUNTY, GA. – According to an online news report posted at morgancountycitizen.com, officials in Morgan County, Georgia, have been differing with the Georgia Department of Transportation over solutions to a specific intersection in the county. County officials would like to see a traffic light installed, while the Georgia DOT says a modified intersection is more appropriate.*
On April 25, an accident occurred between a Honda Civic and a Chevrolet pickup at the intersection of Bethany Road and the 441 Madison Bypass. One driver was taken to a hospital, and both vehicles were totaled. It was one of many that officials in Morgan County have seen at that intersection.
“Thankfully, this was not a fatal accident, but it’s another example of how difficult that intersection is to navigate,” said Madison City Manager David Nunn. “You just can’t see far enough ahead while crossing.”
County and city leaders have for years been pushing the Georgia DOT to install a traffic light at this intersection. The DOT is the agency with the sole authority to change the intersection. Developments in the area, such as a new school and medical facility, make officials even more worried about potential accidents.
In response to concerns, the DOT conducted a traffic study in 2016, and the agency found that the intersection did not have sufficient traffic flow for installation of a light. In the meantime, the DOT agreed to install a restricted crossing U-turn intersection (RCUT). In this type of intersection, drivers can only turn right and have to use a special turn lane to change direction.
Local officials believe this is not the best solution and are still advocating for a traffic light, as more accidents pile up at the intersection.
