DOT Looking to Improve Intersection in Horry County, South Carolina
HORRY COUNTY, SC. – According to an online news story reported at wbtw.com, the South Carolina Department of Transportation is looking to improve a certain intersection that is known for accidents in Horry County, South Carolina. The intersection, which is located in the northern part of the county, has been referred to as a dangerous crossing.*
In June 2018, a church bus from Virginia missed a stop sign at the intersection of South Carolina Highway 9 and South Carolina Highway 410. A pickup truck then crashed into the bus, causing injuries to 17 people. The bus had been carrying a group of church members from Virginia. This is just one of many vehicle collisions at the intersection in Horry County.
“There were 28 crashes over the last few years, 26 of them being the angle-type crashes, which are considered the most severe type of crashes,” said Brett McCutchan, project manager for the South Carolina DOT.
Because of the prevalence of accidents, the DOT wants to make some changes to the crossing of Highway 9 and Highway 410 (also known as Green Sea Road). The DOT has proposed changing the intersection to a restricted cross U-turn (RCUT), which would prevent people from traveling straight on Highway 410 or turning left onto Highway 9.
Drivers approaching Highway 9 would all have to make right turns. A special turn lane in the median would then allow drivers to take another route on Highway 9.
“A traditional four-legged intersection has 32 opportunities to get into a crash,” McCutchan said. “By introducing this RCUT, there would also be 14 opportunities to get into a crash.”
