Report: I-75 One of Most Dangerous Roads in Florida

April 29, 2019

FLORIDA – According to an online news story reported at, Interstate 75 is one of the most dangerous roadways in Florida. It is known for frequent vehicle crashes, many of which involve large trucks and claim innocent lives.*

WTSP reports that a vehicle accident causes I-75 in Florida to shut down every nine days. One such accident occurred in July 2017, when a 25-year-old man from Wildwood, Georgia, was killed after his car was rear-ended by a semi-truck on I-75. The young man’s accident was the second deadly crash on the interstate in fewer than 12 hours that day.

The Florida Department of Transportation has long realized that I-75 is an issue, but officials say that a plan to address the problem takes time to develop and implement.

“We realized that a while ago,” said Florida DOT engineer Tom Byron. “But corridor development takes a long time.”

In 2013, the DOT carried out a study to analyze traffic on I-75 between Hernando County, Florida, and Columbia County, Florida. The study showed congestion and safety issues that could be corrected, and the DOT created a task force to start focusing on ways to improve safety and efficiency on the stretch of I-75.

“In that stretch of road, on average, once every nine days, one direction is fully closed for an incident,” Byron said. “From a user’s perspective, it’s not working like it should be. Short term would be operational improvements.

Byron said the task force is looking into strategies that can tackle specific problems on the interstate.

“One of the main things we’re trying to put a dent in is secondary crashes,” he said. “Twenty percent of fatalities are secondary.”
