Some Residents Concerned About I-285 Expansion Project in Georgia
GEORGIA – According to a news story published online at wsbradio.com, an expansion project for Interstate 285 is moving forward in Georgia, and the project has some residents concerned. Property owners who live along the stretch of I-285 are starting to become worried that their neighborhoods will be affected.*
The Georgia Department of Transportation has plans to expand I-285 in both directions, potentially adding two lanes on each side of the interstate in the north part of the Perimeter. Construction on the project is set to begin sometime in 2022. The project is supposed to reduce traffic congestion around Atlanta and cut commute times for people in the metro.
However, not everyone is excited about the project. Property owners on the project route are worried that their land and homes could be affected. The Department of Transportation will need to gain easements on about 300 pieces of land for the project, which will include land in Cobb County and DeKalb County.
Right now, it is not clear what land will be affected and how. The DOT will need to take all of some pieces of land and only portions of others. Residents are concerned not only for their land but also about noise and lowered property values. These people are turning to the DOT for more information about the project plans, but so far, they’re not getting any answers, they say.
“I feel like it’s a governmental process that nobody has any control over,” said one resident who lives off of I-285 in Dunwoody, Georgia.
