American Auto Association: Vehicle Owners Can be Proactive in Face of Recalls
COLUMBUS, OH. – According to a news story reported online at abc6onyourside.com, the American Automobile Association is letting vehicle owners know that they can be proactive in the face of recalls. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is conducting an air bag investigation that might lead to millions of vehicles being recalled.*
The investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is probing the air bag systems of more than 12 million vehicles manufactured by Fiat Chrysler, Hyundai, Kia, Mitsubishi, and Toyota during the years 2010 through 2019. NHTSA says the air bags might be defective and could have led to eight fatalities.
The American Automobile Association of Ohio says that consumers do not have to wait and wonder if their vehicles are included in open recalls.
“You can go to the dealership, or you can go to nhtsa.gov, and you can look up recalls there,” said American Automobile Association of Ohio public relations manager Kimberly Schwind. “So you will need that VIN number to look up any recalls on your vehicle.”
To find their VINs, drivers can look in the left corner of their vehicle dash or on their vehicle registration papers. The VIN is a 17-digit identification for every vehicle. Any open recalls discovered should be addressed as quickly as possible, Schwind said.
“It’s really important to address these promptly,” she said. “You don’t want to leave them hanging over your head because that can certainly cause some safety concerns. Air bags are an important safety feature on your vehicle and designed to be used in conjunction with seat belts to help slow the body down in case of a crash. So your air bag not functioning properly, that puts you at a risk of injury or even death if you’re involved in a crash.”
