Survey: Distraction is Top Concern for Drivers in United States

April 28, 2019

WASHINGTON, D.C. – According to a story reported online at newsroom.aaa.com, the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety surveyed drivers in the United States and found that distracted driving was one of their top concerns. Polled drivers believed that distraction was more of a danger on the road than many other driving issues.*

The Traffic Safety Culture Index, which is conducted every year by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, found last year that 88 percent of surveyed drivers indicated distracted driving was becoming a greater problem in the United States and was of larger concern that other dangers on the road.

Distracted driving was perceived to be a greater threat to road safety, according to the survey, than aggressive driving (polling at 68 percent), driving under the influence of drugs (polling at 55 percent), and driving under the influence of alcohol (polling at 43 percent). Between 2013 and 2018, the number of people who responded that they talk on their cell phones while driving regularly or semi-regularly rose by 46 percent.

Almost 50 percent of all polled drivers in 2018 said that they had recently talked on their phone while driving, and about 35 percent said they had recently sent a text message or an email while driving. However, almost 60 percent and 80 percent of drivers respectively said that talking on a phone and texting behind the wheel were serious risks to safety.

“With more than 37,000 deaths on U.S. roads in 2016, we need to continue finding ways to limit driving distractions and improve traffic safety,” said Dr. David Yang, AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety Executive Director.
