Law Enforcement Continues Focus on Distracted Driving in Lee County, Georgia

April 20, 2019

LEE COUNTY, GA. – According to a news story posted online at walb.com, law enforcement officers in Lee County, Georgia, are continuing to focus on distracted driving in an effort to save lives. Georgia State Patrol has released distracted driving citation figures for the county through the past year, and Troopers say enforcement is not letting up anytime soon.

According to Georgia State Patrol and WALB, Troopers in Lee County have issued 18 distracted driving citations between March 2018 and the present. One of the citations resulted from a distracted driving collision in which a woman had to be airlifted to a hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

Troopers investigating the case said that woman was holding her phone when the accident occurred, and she ended up being ejected from her vehicle. Law enforcement officers and residents in the county alike are concerned about instances of distracted driving, especially from cell phone use.

“It’s the new age that people can’t put their cell phones down,” a Lee County resident told reporters. “And it’s unfortunate because a lot of accidents happen because of that. The other day, I did see a young lady texting while she was on the highway … I worry because I have a teenage son who drives himself to school, and of course, he’s a teenager, and he had a cell phone, as well.”

Nine months after the Georgia hands-free law took effect, law enforcement officers are still writing citations in high numbers, and they say they’re not letting up in the near future. To save lives in the county, they say they will continue to fully enforce the state’s distracted driving laws.
