Two Fatal Car Accidents in the Same Area in Two Days Have Residents Concerned

April 17, 2019

ALBANY, GA – According to an online news article published by WALB News 10, the same intersection saw two fatal car accidents in a matter of two days, raising concerns and questions by local residents.

An 82-year-old man was tragically killed in a single-vehicle accident on Gravel Hill Road near Nelms Road in Dougherty County.  The man’s vehicle struck a tree, and the man died of blunt-force trauma.

Just one day later, a two-vehicle accident at the same location of Gravel Hill Road near Nelms Road left a 14-year-old boy dead, and others injured.  Early reports indicate the boy was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident, and it is unclear who is to blame for the accident as an investigation is ongoing, andcharges may be filed.

Local residents are raising concerns about having two fatal accidents in two days.  One resident stated that he has almost been involved in multiple accidents at the same intersection of Gravel Hill Road and Nelms Road.  He stated that the intersection needs a traffic light and that the existing flashing caution lights and stop signs are simply not enough to prevent drivers from driving through them without stopping.

The Dougherty County Police stated that statistics show drivers are ignoring the flashing caution lights and stop signs and causing accidents for the past four years.  The police were able to identify a total of thirteen accidents that happened at or near the intersection of Gravel Hill Road and Nelms Road.  Whether the intersection will eventually have a stop light is unclear, but the police have indicated they will thoroughly investigate the situation given two deadly accidents happened in just over 24 hours.
