Families of Distracted Driving Victims Seek to Impose Law Banning Holding a Cell Phone When Behind the Wheel

Charlotte, NC – According to an online news report from wsoctv.com, there is a push from families of distracted driving victims to impose penalties on drivers who hold their cell phone when behind the wheel.*

Legislators met with families of distracted driving victims in a conference on Tuesday, April 2, 2019 to hear their deeply personal stories of the anguish they experience as a result of their losses.

“If this law would’ve been in effect nine years ago, we wouldn’t be here today," one parent said.  This individual lost his daughter who was using her cell phone and then collided with a truck. “I don’t want nobody to go through what I’m going through," the father said.

Regrettably, this man is not the only one who has suffered a loss due to distracted driving.

A woman lost a son due to a distracted driving accident.  The son was student at Butler High who lost his life in south Charlotte.  The woman noted that her son was using a flip phone and was involved in a fatal accident. “This is the phone, my son’s phone that I pulled out of the back of his Honda Civic," said the mother pointing to the old phone.

The mother met with legislators and state police on Tuesday, April 2, 2019 to request that people support HB 144, which is North Carolina’s bill making it illegal to hold a cell phone when behind the wheel.

Notwithstanding, there have been similar bills introduced that have not been passed due to people who are concerned that the law erodes their individual rights.
