Pedestrian Traffic Deaths Increasing in Cumberland County, North Carolina
CUMBERLAND COUNTY, NC. – According to a news story posted online at fayobserver.com, pedestrian traffic deaths are increasing in Cumberland County, North Carolina. Based on data provided by law enforcement in the county, pedestrians are dying in higher numbers each year because of collisions with vehicles.*
Cumberland County law enforcement responded to six pedestrian fatality accidents in 2015, according to the news report, and that number increased to 10 in 2016. The latest figures from the North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles show that officers investigated 14 pedestrian traffic deaths in 2017.
The North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles indicates that an average of 10 pedestrian deaths have occurred in Cumberland County in the last five years. The upward trend mirrors that of the nation, as pedestrian deaths have also been climbing around the country.
“The number of pedestrian fatalities in the United States has grown substantially faster than all other traffic deaths,” said the Governors Highway Safety Association in a 2017 Spotlight on Highway Safety report.
In its report, the Governors Highway Safety Association predicted that final numbers would show more than 6,200 pedestrian traffic deaths in the United States in 2018. This would represent the highest number of pedestrian fatalities nationwide since 1990. It also represents an increase of 4 percent since 2017.
According to the Watch for Me NC Program, about 3,000 people are struck by vehicles in the state of North Carolina every year. About 160 people are killed in those accidents each year. Those figures make North Carolina one of the most unsafe states in the U.S. for pedestrians.
