BMW Recalls C600 & C650 Scooters for Brake Fluid Leaks

April 07, 2019

According to an article published at, BMW issued a recall of C600 and C650 Scooters manufactured from 2015 to 2018 due to brake fluid leaks.*

BMW is recalling all BMW C600 and C650 Sport scooters manufactured between 2015 and 2018.  It is also recalling 2015 through 2018 C650 GTs with a diesel powertrain. The total amount of scooters affected is two thousand seven hundred seven vehicles.  The source of the issue is a possible leak of brake fluid in the hose.

BMW notes that “...(the) hose may develop a leak as a result of a flexural fatigue crack that could be induced after repeated cycling of the handlebars to the maximum left position.”  According to, this means that “the repeated twisting of the head stock of the scooters to the left to lock it in place—like you do on a motorcycle—could eventually cause the brake hose to crack or get damaged at the connection.”

Leaking brake fluid may result in a decrease in the efficiency of one’s brakes.  In this instance, BMW indicates that it is only the front brake that is affected by the recall.  The rear brake is controlled by the hand brake which is operational to the fullest extent. The front brakes are the only brakes subject to the recall.

Those who own affected scooters may possibly see a puddle of leaking brake fluid underneath the scooter or lesser than average brake fluid levels.  This may mean that it will take longer for the scooter to brake.

The failing of the front brake is extremely concerning and may lead to accidents if a scooter cannot brake properly.  That is why owners of affected units should contact their local BMW dealership to have the hose replaced and “reinforced with an EPDM sleeve.”  Individuals who have sought to have the vehicle fixed on their own are eligible to receive reimbursement for the cost of the repair.
