Lee County, Florida, Sees 28 Fatal Traffic Accidents So Far in 2019
LEE COUNTY, FL. – According to an online news report published at news-press.com, Lee County, Florida, has seen 28 fatal traffic accidents so far in 2019. The rate of fatalities makes it seem like the county is going to surpass its 2018 total for deadly traffic accidents.*
Less than three months into 2019, Lee County has recorded a total of 28 fatalities from road accidents, including seven pedestrian fatalities and four bicyclist fatalities. Four fatal pedestrian accidents have taken place in the county so far in March, three of which occurred on just one roadway in Fort Myers, Florida — Palm Beach Boulevard.
Twelve of the fatal accidents so far in 2019 took place in North Fort Myers. The highest number of fatal traffic accidents in Lee County was in 2005, when a total of 150 people were killed.
“As a driver, cyclist, and pedestrian who engaged in each of those modes on pretty much a daily basis, I’m always concerned about how much speeding and risky driving routinely takes place,” said Dan Moser, a member of the steering committee for BikeWalkLee. “Apparently, personal responsibility isn’t the rule when operating a machine that can kill at the touch of a pedal, so it seems like more robust enforcement is called for. That’s unfortunate, but we can only blame ourselves for creating such a dangerous traffic environment.”
Law enforcement officers want drivers to pay more attention on the roadways and understand that they need to look out for pedestrians and cyclists each time they get behind the wheel.
“Drivers must be 100 percent focused and aware of their surroundings at all times,” said Lt. Greg Bueno, with the Florida Highway Patrol. “This is the Sunshine State. Bicyclists and pedestrians of all ages may be in the vicinity of our roadways at any point, so drivers must drive with due care at all times and abide by all traffic laws.”
