Pedestrian Deaths Increasing at Alarming Rate in United States
UNITED STATES – Pedestrian deaths are increasing at an alarming rate in the United States, according to an online news story posted at king5.com. A report from the Governors Highway Safety Association indicates that pedestrian traffic fatalities have reached their highest total in almost three decades.
While overall fatal traffic accidents decreased by about 6 percent between 2008 and 2017, pedestrian deaths rose by 35 percent in that same time, according to information from the Governor’s Highway Safety Association report. In 2018, more than 6,200 pedestrians were killed in road accidents, and pedestrians died in numbers 4 percent higher that year than the previous year.
The Governors Highway Safety Association said that pedestrian fatalities in 2018 approached a figure not seen in the United States in about three decades. The report indicated that population expansion and economic factors influencing the number of people walking might have contributed to the trend of pedestrian fatalities.
The report also said that distracted driving from cell phone use and a higher number of truck and SUV sales might also explain the trend. Pedestrian-versus-truck or SUV accidents typically result in fatalities more often due to the size and weight of the vehicles. The Governors Highway Safety Association noted, however, that not enough evidence was available to make determinations about the exact causes of the increase in pedestrian deaths.
The report indicated that 72 percent of fatal pedestrian collisions occur outside of intersections, and 26 percent occur at road intersections. In addition, 75 percent of pedestrian fatalities occur at night.
