Duluth Police: Accidents Reduced Since Enactment of Georgia Hands-Free Law

March 10, 2019

DULUTH, GA. – According to an online news story reported at patch.com, the Duluth Police Department says that vehicle accidents have been reduced since the enactment of Georgia’s Hand-Free Law. In addition, the police department said it has issued more citations to drivers since the law went into effect.*

Enforcement of the Hands-Free Georgia Act began in July 2018. The law prohibits people from holding electronic devices while they are driving, which includes cell phones. In order to use these devices in the car, drivers have to use hands-free technology, such as Bluetooth in the vehicle. Drivers may only use one button to make or answer calls.

The exceptions to the law are when drivers need to make 911 emergency calls, such as during an accident, and when drivers are legally parked. Stop lights are not an exception, so drivers holding their phones when stopped at a light or in traffic are in violation of the law. Drivers have to be in a legal area for parking with the vehicle in park in order to hold their phones or other devices.

Police officers in Duluth, Georgia, say they have issued more than 500 citations for violations of the law since it went into effect last summer. They also have responded to fewer accidents since the law was enacted. The Duluth Police Department said that compared to 2017, vehicle accidents in the city are now down 12 percent.

In a post on social media, the police department credited the diligence of officers in enforcing the law with the drop in traffic accidents.

“The decline in reported accidents is credited to our officers and their aggressive approach to this law,” the post said.
