North Carolina Lawmakers Looking to Pass Distracted Driving Law
RALEIGH, NC. – North Carolina lawmakers are looking to pass a distracted driving law in the state, according to an online report published by njsonline.com. Rep. Kevin Corbin (R-Macon) submitted a proposed law in February to address distracted driving in North Carolina.
Distracted driving is a problem that has had increasing levels of attention from law enforcement, emergency responders, and members of the public. If passed, the bill would make North Carolina the 17th state to enact legislation targeted at cell phone use while driving.
Corbin said that he decided to draft the bill after learning that a poll from Independent Insurance Agents showed 93 percent of people surveyed believed that distracted driving was a large issue. The majority of the survey participants ranked distracted driving a larger safety issue than drunk driving.
In doing research for the bill, Corbin met with Georgia Rep. John Carson, who created anti-distracted driving legislation that went into effect in Georgia last summer. Corbin and Carson discussed the process that took place in Georgia and the results the law has seen so far, which helped Corbin form a bill he thought was right for North Carolina.
“The thing that really hit me was that Georgia has a 16 percent decrease in traffic accidents after passing the bill, and they only passed the bill this past July,” Corbin said. “State Farm just announced, for the first time in 20 years, the car insurance premiums in Georgia were going to go down.”
Texting while driving is already prohibited in North Carolina, but police officers say they have a difficult time enforcing the law. It is not easy to tell what someone is doing on a phone, and unless someone admits to texting, tickets won’t be written.
