CJ’s Law Passes Georgia Senate; Tougher Penalties for Hit-and-Run Drivers Likely

March 01, 2019

GEORGIA – According to an online news report published by wsbradio.com, CJ’s Law, a bill that would place tougher penalties on hit-and-run drivers, has passed the Georgia Senate. The bill passed handily, indicating that increased punishment for this type of vehicle accident is likely to become law.

CJ’s Law is named after a 23-year-old man who was hit and killed by a vehicle 10 years ago in Cobb County, Georgia. The driver who hit the young man did not stop, and he was subsequently struck by multiple other vehicles. The original driver has never been identified and arrested.

After losing a loved one, the man’s family members turned their grief into action and began advocating for stricter penalties in Georgia for drivers who leave the scene of accidents. A proposed law to increase the punishment for hit-and-run drivers gained some momentum previously but then failed to pass the Georgia Legislature in 2018.

The family did not give up and contacted Sen. Elena Parent (D-Atlanta) to sponsor a new bill in the 2019 session. Parent was immediately supportive of the idea and has been pushing for the bill’s passage so far this year. CJ’s Law would increase the maximum possible prison time for a hit-and-run collision from five years to 10 years.

“It is totally unacceptable to cause a serious accident, harm somebody and flee and keep going,” Parent told WSB News. “You have a duty to stop and render aid when you cause an accident that causes serious harm.”

Upon passing the Senate, the bill will move to the Georgia House for a vote.
