Report: Georgia Ranked 14th for Deadliest Roadways

February 25, 2019

GEORGIA – An online news story from patch.com discusses a recent report from the website 24/7 Wall St. regarding the rate of deadly vehicle accidents in each state in the U.S. Out of all the states, Georgia holds the No. 14 ranking for deadliest roadways, according to the information from 24/7 Wall St.*

In general, based on the information compiled and organized by 24/7 Wall St., states in the southern part of the U.S. tend to have the largest numbers of deadly vehicle crashes annually. States in the Northeast and Midwest regions of the U.S., however, tend to have the lowest numbers of deadly crashes.

Georgia was listed at No. 14 for most deadly roads by 24/7 Wall St. with a rate of 15.1 traffic fatalities per every 100,000 people in the state. In 2016, Georgia saw 1,554 traffic fatalities, which was the fourth-highest in the nation.

The highest number of fatal crashes on a holiday in 2016 occurred on Martin Luther King’s birthday, when 17 deadly vehicle accidents took place in Georgia. Thirty-nine percent of the fatal crashes in Georgia occurred on rural roads, according to 24/7 Wall St.

Georgia was one spot higher on the list than Idaho (with 15.0 fatalities per every 100,000 people) and was one spot lower than Florida (with 15.4 fatalities per every 100,000 people). Mississippi was the state in the No. 1 ranking, having 23.1 traffic fatalities per every 100,000 people. The other states in the top five included (in order of rank) Alabama, South Carolina, New Mexico, and Wyoming.
