NHTSA Ranks States with Most Fatal Car Accidents; Georgia at No. 4

February 25, 2019

GEORGIA – According to an online news report published by usnews.com, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently ranked states with the most fatal car accidents. The state of Georgia appeared in the No. 4 spot for most car accidents among all states in the nation.*

According to data from NHTSA, more than 37,000 people died in vehicle accidents in the United States during 2017. More than 8 percent of these fatal crashes were related to distracted driving, the NHTSA says. The fatal accident totals were lower in 2017 than in 2016, however. In 2016, according to NHTSA, close to 38,000 people were killed in U.S. vehicle crashes.

Georgia was in the No. 4 spot for most fatal vehicle crashes. In 2017, the state of Georgia saw 1,540 deadly traffic accidents. This was a 1 percent difference from 2016, according to NHTSA’s data. Georgia only had fewer fatal accidents than Florida, California, and Texas.

The other states in the top 10 for most fatal vehicle accidents, based on the data from NHTSA, included (in ascending order):

  1. Michigan – No. 10 with 1,030 accident fatalities in 2017
  2. Tennessee – No. 9 with 1,040 accident fatalities in 2017
  3. Illinois – No. 8 with 1,097 accident fatalities in 2017
  4. Pennsylvania – No. 7 with 1,137 accident fatalities in 2017
