NHTSA: Intersection by UAB is Most Dangerous in Alabama

February 25, 2019

BIRMINGHAM, AL. – According to a news story posted online at patch.com, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has deemed an intersection near the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) the most dangerous in the state. NHTSA recently released the results of a study it performed using crash data from 2003 to 2012 in every state in the U.S.*

The study by NHTSA analyzed data from these years in each state and matched accident data to geographical coordinates to determine which areas of every state had the most accidents. Reporters with Patch then honed further in on the data to identify street crossings that had the most traffic accidents.

In Alabama, based on information from NHTSA and Patch, the most dangerous intersection is University Boulevard and 28th Street South, which is located next to the UAB campus in Birmingham, Alabama. Two fatal vehicle collisions occurred at this intersection during the studied time period, and numerous other accidents that did not result in fatalities also occurred at the crossing.

Additional intersections with large numbers of accidents included Highway 280 and Highway 119; West Oxmoor Road and Huntington Parc; and Highway 75 and Sweeney Hallow Road. It is not clear if any fatal accidents were recorded at these intersections.

The NHTSA study showed that the most dangerous intersection in the United States is located in Pennsylvania. One intersection in Bensalem, Pennsylvania, was the site of seven fatality accidents. In the area within one mile of the intersection, a total of 144 accidents occurred in just two years. These accidents resulted in numerous injuries and fatalities.
