Report: Atlanta, Georgia, in Top 10 for Worst Truck Bottlenecks
ATLANTA, GA. – According to a news story reported online by ajc.com, the Atlanta, Georgia, metro is in the top 10 for worst truck bottlenecks in the country. Three intersections in the metro reached the top 10, based on data collected and ranked by the American Transportation Research Institute.*
Every year, the American Transportation Research Institute ranks the worst truck bottlenecks in the United States. The interchange of Interstate 285 and Interstate 85 in Atlanta (also known as Spaghetti Junction) used to be the reigning champion of worst bottlenecks. But in 2019, it was kicked out of the No. 1 spot by an intersection in New Jersey.
However, Atlanta still got plenty of attention in the rankings, with three different intersections appearing in the top 10. Spaghetti Junction went from the No. 1 spot in 2018 to the No. 2 rank this year. In addition, the intersection of Interstate 75 and I-285 moved from No. 4 in 2018 to No. 3 in 2019, and the intersection of Interstate 20 and I-285 moved from No. 17 in 2018 to No. 10 in 2019.
UPS, which has a location near Spaghetti Junction, says it benefits from knowing which areas are worst for bottlenecks.
“Congestion is a persistent issue for our industry and our company specifically,” said UPS Freight President Rich McArdle. “For UPS, if all of our vehicles are delayed just five minutes a day, every day, it costs our company $114 million a year. In order to combat congestion, many companies must plan operational redundancies to meet their customer needs. Using data like ATRI’s bottleneck report can help both companies and elected officials to make more informed decisions.”
