Southwest Georgia Counties See Large Numbers of Deer Accidents This Winter

February 25, 2019

GEORGIA – As reported online by a news story from, counties in Southwest Georgia have been seeing large numbers of deer accidents this winter. Officials encourage drivers to use caution and drive carefully to avoid these accidents.*

Deer accidents usually increase during the fall and winter months because those are the months for deer mating season when deer are more active. However, this January, unusually high numbers of deer accidents occurred in one region of Georgia.

Sheriff’s officers and Georgia State Patrol posts in Southwest Georgia report that more than 150 vehicle accidents involving deer occurred in the month of January 2019. This was across 17 different counties in the region. The counties of Berrien and Worth had the most deer accidents at 27 each.

Berrien County Sheriff Ray Paulk said the number of deer accidents in 2019 already looked to be higher than 2018.

“For the year 2018, we investigated about 180 deer versus vehicle crashes,” Paulk said. “This year, we’re already, since January, we’ve had 27.”

After Berrien and Worth counties, the counties in Southwest Georgia with the highest numbers of deer accidents were:

  • Lee
  • Crisp
  • Tift
  • Mitchell
  • Irwin
  • Ben hill
  • Baker
  • Colquitt

The accidents in these counties did not result in any fatalities, but some people were injured after the crashes. Deer are large and heavy and can cause damage to a person’s vehicle and injury to the occupants. Officials with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources say drivers can help avoid deer accidents by staying observant, keeping an eye out for deer, and reducing speed in areas known or marked for deer crossing.
