Proposed Bill in Georgia Would Require Lower Car Insurance Rates for Military

February 05, 2019

GEORGIA – A proposed bill in the Georgia State House would require lower car insurance rates to be offered to young members of the military, according to an online story reported by The bill would allow military members who are between the ages of 18 and 24 to receive rates comparable to older drivers.

Currently, younger drivers in the 18-to-24 age group generally have higher auto insurance rates. It is not until drivers reach the age of 25, when they have more experience on the road, that they are offered discounts on auto insurance. However, several Georgia representatives have proposed a bill that would extend the discounted rates to younger members of the military.

Rep. Mike Glanton, Rep. Richard Smith, Rep. Carl Gilliard, Rep. Ron Stephens, Rep. Calvin Smyre, and Rep. Jesse Petrea co-sponsored House Bill 61, which they filed on January 28. It is a bipartisan bill that would require a “reduction in the premium for motor vehicle liability, first-party medical, and collision coverage for each named driver under 25 years of age.”

Under the proposed law, active duty members of the U.S. military, including those in full-time duty, National Guard, and reserve components with active duty orders, who are permanent residents of the state of Georgia would be eligible for mandatory lower auto insurance rates.

Those not eligible for the lower rates under the law would include anyone who was found at-fault for a vehicle accident in the last two years; anyone who has in the last three years been convicted of a traffic violation that placed three or more points on their driver’s license; anyone who has had a license revoked or suspended in the last three years; and anyone who has in the last five years been convicted of felony drug offenses.
