Atlanta Pedestrian Bridge to be Closed to Public During Super Bowl
ATLANTA, GA. – Rumors regarding the pedestrian bridge over Northside Drive in Atlanta, Georgia, have been confirmed, according to an online news story from ajc.com. The bridge will be closed to the public during the Super Bowl because of security concerns.*
During the days leading up to Super Bowl LIII, hosted in Atlanta, reports started to surface that the pedestrian bridge on Northside Drive might be closed. Construction on the $27 million bridge started in 2016 during then-Mayor Kasim Reed’s administration. At that time, the bridge was marketed as serving the Vine City community.
As plans progressed, reports indicated the bridge might be primarily for the new Mercedes Benz Stadium. It seemed that was the case last year, when Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms’ administration asked the Atlanta City Council for $10 million more in funding for the bridge. The argument behind this request was that the money was necessary to complete the bridge in time for Super Bowl LIII.
On January 28, a report quoted the parent company for the Atlanta Falcons and MARTA as saying that the pedestrian bridge would not be open during the game. In the days following, Mayor Bottoms’ office would not confirm this information. However, on January 30, officials with the City of Atlanta released a statement saying the bridge would, indeed, be closed because of security concerns.
The statement read: “This even has been categorized by the federal government as a Special Event Assessment Rating (SEAR) Level 1. The FBI and NFL in consultation with other security partners made the determination to close the bridge to the public ahead of the event. However, the bridge will be open for attendees to exit at the conclusion of the game.”
