Rainy Conditions Lead to Hydroplaning in Atlanta Area of Georgia
ALPHARETTA, GA. – According to an online news story from 11alive.com, rainy conditions resulting in hydroplaning incidents in the Atlanta area of the state of Georgia. Wet and icy weather created some dangerous driving conditions throughout the state during the weekend.*
One of the larger dangers of water on roadways is hydroplaning, or the presence of a layer of water between a car’s tires and the road’s surface, which results in loss of traction. These incidents tend to occur more often on highways and interstates on which drivers are using cruise control. Cruise control contributes to hydroplaning by causing a car’s tires to move faster as they lift off the road.
On January 12, as a rainstorm moved through Georgia, the Alpharetta Police Department reported that officers had responded to numerous incidents of hydroplaning on Ga. 400 North. Several drivers had hydroplaned and traveled off of the roadway between Mansell Road and Haynes Bridge Road. Photos from the area reportedly showed multiple cars had traveled into the wooded area on the side of the highway.
Police asked drivers to use caution as they traveled through Alpharetta and the rest of the Atlanta area on the evening of January 12 and into January 13. The rain showers were expected to continue on January 13, and some parts of northeast Georgia were expected to have icy conditions have the temperatures dropped below freezing.
Traffic safety officials say if drivers begin to hydroplane, the best thing they can do is ease off the accelerator while positioning the wheel straight ahead.
