Vehicle Accident Statistics in the United States

January 20, 2019

UNITED STATES – An online article posted at discusses the upward trend of vehicle accidents in the United States and the area of the country that sees the most traffic crashes. By accident totals, the state of Florida is the most accident-prone area of the nation.*

Vehicle crashes have been increasing in the United States, in part because of population growth. Some roads in the country simply were not designed for the number of vehicles traveling on them today, which increases the risks of accidents.

From the latest recordings, 325.7 million people live in the United States, and 222 million people have driver’s licenses. The country sees about 6 million vehicle accidents every year, and traffic crashes are the leading cause of death for people ages 2 to 34 in the U.S. This means that vehicle crashes are claiming the lives of children and young adults at a higher rate than any other potential cause of death.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration concluded that 37,461 people were killed in vehicle accidents in 2016. In other words, 102 people in the U.S. died every day because of car crashes.

Moreover, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that eight people are admitted to hospitals, and 99 people require emergency treatment for every one death from vehicle accidents. Using the NHTSA figure of 102 deaths a day, the CDC would say 816 people also are hospitalized and 10,098 people require emergency treatment for vehicle accidents every single day in the U.S.

When traffic accident totals are broken down by city and state, Florida is the most accident-prone state in the U.S. Four cities in Florida appear on the list of the top 10 most dangerous cities for driving in the country, including Orlando (No. 1), Miami (No. 4), Tampa (No. 8), and Jacksonville (No. 10).
