Companies Inching Closer to Full Automation in Vehicles

January 16, 2019

An article online at freightwaves.com discusses the timeline by which manufacturer Daimler expects to have almost fully automated trucks on the road. What do the various levels of automobilesation mean?

Companies Inching Closer to Full Automation in Vehicles

German manufacturer CES Daimler Trucks announced on January 7 that the company is investing about $570 million in its autonomous truck fleet, which it expects to reach Level 4 automation sometime in 2019. It expects to have Level 4 trucks on the roads within 10 years, the company said.

Here is a look at the varying levels of autonomous technology in terms of motor vehicles:

Level 1 Automation – This level of automation already widely exists in vehicles on the road today. It includes features like automatic emergency braking, parallel parking assistance, and lane change alerts.

Level 2 Automation – Level 2 automation vehicles are those that we think about as being tested today. The vehicle can perform many tasks by itself but still requires a human driver to be alert and inside at all times.

Level 3/4 Automation – Some argue that there is little distinction between Level 3 automation and Level 4. At these levels, the human driver can be progressively less engaged, as the vehicle is less reliant on human intervention for most functions. The distinction for many is that at Level 4, while the human still needs to be inside, the vehicle does not need the human’s help.

Level 5 Automation – A Level 5 vehicle is 100 percent autonomous. The only humans inside are those being transported by the vehicle. The vehicle performs all functions by itself and does not ever require human intervention.

No Level 4 or Level 5 vehicles exist today, but it appears Daimler is inching closer to making a Level 4 vehicle, after which it would only be one step away from full automation.
