Study: Alabama in Top Five for Highest Drunk Driving Deaths

January 09, 2019

ALABAMA – According to an online news report from wtvm.com, a recent study found that Alabama was in the top five states in the U.S. with the highest number drunk driving deaths.*

A company called SafeWisecompleted a recent study in which it figured up the rate of impaired driving fatalities in each state, using information from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Alabama was ranked No. 5 for most drunk driving deaths in 2017, having a rate of 5.49 drunken or impaired driving fatalities per every 100,000 people.

The other four states with the highest rates were Wyoming at 7.59 per 100,000 population, South Carolina at 6.22, North Dakota at 6.08, and New Mexico at 5.74. On the other end of the rankings, the five states with the lowest drunk driving deaths were New Jersey at 1.38 deaths per 100,000 population, New York at 1.48, Minnesota at 1.52, Utah at 1.70 and Massachusetts at 1.74.

Prior to the start of the 2018 holiday season, Alabama State Troopers responded to 111 fatal crashes involving alcohol. This does not include crashes in local municipalities.

“What a lot of people don’t realize is if you get behind the wheel of a vehicle and you’re impaired by alcohol or drugs and you’re involved in a wreck, and you hurt or kill somebody, you’re looking at a felony charge or a homicide charge if that person dies,” said Corp. Jess Thornton.

Pamela Morton, an Alabama state victim services coordinator with Mothers Against Drunk Driving, reminds drivers that with services like Uber and Lyft, safe rides are easy to find.

“There are so many options,” Morton said. “There is never an excuse to get behind a wheel after drinking.”
