Statewide Campaign Announced Designed to Put an End to Drunk Driving

January 04, 2019

MARIETTA, GA. — The Georgia Governor's Office of Highway Safety announced that it has joined with Team Georgia to remind people to drive sober or enlist a designated driver, every day, and especially during the holiday season, the Marietta Daily Journal reported. The program encourages local drinking establishments and restaurants to provide complimentarynon-alcoholic drinks to designated drivers as well as promoting ride share programs like AAA Tow to Go and Checker Cab.

The carnage left on Georgia roads last December is a cruel reminder of the hazards of drunk driving. The Christmas travel window, which starts on December 22 at 6: 00 p.m. and ends on December 26, saw 15 people die in Georgia traffic crashes during that short time frame. The Georgia state patrol investigated 515 car accidents that left 129 people injured. Additionally, the Georgia state patrol arrested 192 drivers on suspicion of drunk driving, wrote 7,323 citations along with 12,312 warnings for various infractions. Those statistics do not include the efforts of local police and sheriffs' deputies to intercede with motor vehicle infractions and drunk driving.

The Governor's Office of Highway Safety reminds drivers that even a couple of drinks can impair one's ability to drive safely.  Acting or feeling drunk is not the appropriate indicator that one is too drunk to drive.  Therefore, the safest course of action for anyone considering enjoying the holidays by having a couple of drinks is to plan ahead and designate a sober driver.  The AAA program and the Checker Cab ride program are offered free-of-charge during the holidays.

Drunk driving is a nationwide problem. In 2017, 37,133 people died in traffic accidents across the nation. An astounding 29-percentof the fatal accidents involved at least one driver who was over the "legal limit."
