Intersection Construction Projects Progressing in Sandy Springs, Georgia

January 01, 2019

SANDY SPRINGS, GA. – As reported online by patch.com, two intersection projects are making progress in the city of Sandy Springs, Georgia. The projects are designed to reduce traffic congestion at the intersections and avoid potential vehicle crashes.*

The Sandy Springs City Council approved construction of right-of-way and easement for the intersection of Spalding/Trowbridge/Dalrymple at a price of $1.35 million. The project is funded through revenue from the Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax and should reduce delays and congestion at the intersection. The traffic signal will be upgraded in the project, and turn lanes will be placed.

The city has also approved plans to change the intersection at Mt. Paran Road and Powers Ferry Road. The design will include a roundabout, crosswalks, and ADA landings, and the project carries a price of about $1.8 million. Since 2011, this intersection has been the site of more than 30 crashes, and traffic is routinely delayed in the area during morning and afternoon rush hours.

A roundabout is expected to eliminate the four-way stop and keep traffic moving. Members of the public indicated to the city that in redesigning the intersection, they would prefer a roundabout over a traffic signal. Roundabouts are shown to reduce crashes and encourage positive traffic flow. The approved roundabout will not have vegetation in the middle, so large trucks can traverse the middle if necessary.

The project at Mt. Paran and Powers Ferry will begin sometime in 2020. The project at Spalding/Trowbridge/Dalrymple will begin sometime in 2019.
