BMW Projects Fully Autonomous Vehicle Production in 2021
UNITED STATES – According to an online news report from motorauthority.com, automaker BMW is projecting it will have a fully autonomous vehicle ready for production in 2021.*
While other companies have been open about their self-driving vehicle ventures (Waymo, Honda, Ford, Uber, Mercedes), BMW has kept a low profile on the subject. But not anymore. The car manufacturer recently dropped a bombshell in claiming it will have a Level 5 autonomous vehicle ready for production and sale to the public by 2021.
Level 5 autonomy means the car is fully autonomous. Everything about the vehicle is controlled without a human. The vehicle BMW intends to manufacture will not have a steering wheel. Right now, the company says the only thing stopping it is government regulations and maps. But overcoming these obstacles, BMW says it will be able to beat companies like Waymo in bringing a fully autonomous vehicle to production called the Vision iNext SUV.
Waymo is launching a self-driving taxi service and has logged millions of miles in its various autonomous vehicles. It is not clear what BMW has done in the way of testing. In 2015, the company bought a machine-readable map, called an HD Live Map, from a company named HERE. The HERE mapping, which cost BMW $3.1 billionin a joint venture with Mercedes-Benz and Audi, is highly detailed and can update itself by way of vehicles out on the roads.
It’s not yet known what BMW has done with the map technology, but its Level 5 SUV likely has a lot of hurdles to jump before actually moving into production.
