Abraham Baldwin Ag College Receives State Grant for Safe Driving Program

December 26, 2018

DAHLONEGA, GA. – According to an online report from albanyherald.com, the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety has awarded the Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College with a grant for a safe driving program.*

The grant totals $8,595 and is awarded for participation in the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety Young Adult Program. The program strives to use peer education, educational speakers, and seminars for prevention of young adult vehicle crashes and fatalities. The program involves collaboration with campus Greek community, student athletes, campus police, health and wellness departments, and counseling services.

With the funds, ABAC will create DUI simulations for students and will feature professional speakers about impaired driving prevention. The campus events usually coincide with national events, like National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week or Safe Spring Break.

“The Governor’s Office of Highway Safety is committed to changing the tragic trend of young adult driver deaths in Georgia,” said GOHS Director Harris Blackwood. “We’re here to make changes, and I believe that students at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College can help us achieve the goal of lowering driver, crash, injury and fatality rates statewide. Who better to address the challenges and dangers facing young adults than their peers? I’m confident these students can convince their peers to be safer, more conscientious drivers.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention car crashes are the leading cause of death for teenagers in the United States. In 2015, a total of 2,333 teens between the ages of 16 and 19 were killed in vehicle crashes in the United States. This equates to six teen deaths every day due to motor vehicle injuries. More than 235,000 teenagers of the same age were treated in emergency departments in 2016 for injuries sustained in motor vehicle crashes.
