Ford Working on Technology to Eliminate Traffic Lights

December 21, 2018

UNITED STATES – According to an online news report from motorauthority.com, automaker Ford is working on technology that could eliminate the need for traffic lights in the future.*

Ford has been working on communications technology called “vehicle-to-vehicle” or “V2X,” which allows vehicles on the road to send information to each other. The car manufacturer thinks that development of this technology could mean a world without traffic lights. Ford is going to launch a trial Intersection Priority Management (IPM) system in the United Kingdom that will test the V2X technology.

The technology is developed in a way similar to how people navigate through a large crowd. People don’t stop and wait for their turn in a crowd, they adjust speed and maneuver around to get through the crowd without bumping into anyone. Through receipt of information about other cars’ positions, speeds, and directions around an intersection, Ford believes cars can use V2X to move through intersections without stopping.

It seems a far-off concept right now because every car on the road would need to have V2X capabilities in order for the traffic lights to come down. But Ford says the technology could find a good home in autonomous cars. In the future, humans could be riding around in self-driving cars, and the only time they will stop is to get out at their destinations.

IPM is part of the U.K. Autodrive program, which is government funded. The program has been reviewing and testing new car technologies and is about to wrap up. Ford has been working with the program to develop new safety technology for cars.
