GA, SC Departments of Public Safety Release Thanksgiving Accident Numbers

GEORGIA – According to an online news report from augustachronicle.com, the Georgia and South Carolina departments of public safety have released accident numbers from the Thanksgiving holiday.*

During the holiday travel period, which officially ran from 6 p.m. Wednesday, November 21, to midnight on Monday, November 26, a total of 26 people died in vehicle accidents on Georgia and South Carolina roads. The Georgia Department of Public Safety reports that 15 of those fatalities were in Georgia, and the South Carolina Department of Public Safety reports that 11 of the fatalities were in South Carolina. 

In addition, Georgia State Patrol investigated a total of 610 traffic crashes during the 2018 Thanksgiving travel period, 242 of which resulted in injuries. Troopers issued a total of 11,523 citations and 17,046 warnings, and also arrested 339 people for driving under the influence. These numbers were up slightly from the previous year. In 2017, 12 fatalities occurred in Georgia during the Thanksgiving travel period, and eight occurred in South Carolina. 

Law enforcement officers reported that a lot of the traffic issues they saw were around Black Friday. Many accidents occurred in parking lots and at entrances and exits to shopping centers. And the holiday season isn’t over. With Christmas and New Year’s on the way, law enforcement want to remind drivers to be prepared and use caution.

“Best thing to do is pay attention to the roadway and definitely leave a little bit early,” said Sgt. Mark Chestang of the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office. “Give yourself a little bit more time, and be patient.”
