Georgia Wreck Shows Impatience of Drivers Around Crash Sites

December 18, 2018

ATLANTA, GA. – An online article from ajc.com discusses the impatience many drivers display when they are sitting in crash traffic and how their actions can lead to serious consequences.*

A major wreck occurred on Interstate 20 East at Exit 59, near the Downtown Connector in Atlanta, Georgia. The wreck caused long delays for drivers in the area, as the three left lanes of I-20 East were shut down. Traffic was jammed back to Lowery Boulevard and onto both directions of Interstate 75 and Interstate 85.

The crash occurred on the left side of the road, so at one point, emergency crews had to shut down the entire east side of the interstate to clear the wrecked vehicles to the right shoulder. HERO units placed cones across the interstate to prevent traffic from going through, and a HERO driver was using hand signals to divert traffic onto the Glenwood Memorial Connector exit ramp.

Once traffic started moving onto the exit ramp, the HERO driver walked back toward his vehicle to start pulling the wrecked vehicles to the right. Cars then started driving around the cones he placed and through the crash scene to continue on the interstate. One car came inches away from hitting the HERO truck. Other HERO units then had to go back to the area where the cones were placed to stop cars from driving through.

“It was a very dangerous situation that endangered the lives of first responders on the scene, because people wanted to be impatient and ignore the traffic diversion,” said reporter Alex Williams, who witnessed the events unfold.

All drivers can identify with the frustration of sitting in blocked traffic, but acting foolishly at the scene will place others in danger, including emergency crews and the people involved in the wreck who are counting on those crews for life-saving treatment.
