Ohio Community to Begin Ticketing Drivers for Distractions Caused by Pets
MANTUA, OH. – A community in Ohio will begin ticketing drivers for distractions caused by their pets, according to an online news story from atlanta.cbslocal.com. The new ticketing is part of an effort to reduce distracted driving crashes.*
Beginning December 20, any driver in the Village of Mantua, Ohio, who is caught holding an animal or behaving distractedly because of an animal in the car will be cited by police. The initiative is part of a comprehensive law aimed at reducing distracted driving. The law also prohibits text messaging in a vehicle, including reading a text, sending a text, or writing a text.
Mantua Police said the law does not include using a cell phone to make a call or using hands-free or Bluetooth devices for phone calls. These actions are not illegal while driving under the new law. Distracted driving crashes kill approximately nine people in the United States every day and injure more than 1,000 others every day.
Mantua Mayor Linda Clark said the community’s new law is designed to ensure the safety of everyone on the roads — both drivers and pets.
“[Having a pet in the car is] going to create issues when you’re trying to turn, or if a dog sees something, and they move around, they could obstruct your vision,” Clark said. “So it’s a matter of keeping the animal safe, as well as the driver.”
A violation of the law will be a misdemeanor. A second offense within a year or any offense that leads to a traffic accident will be a misdemeanor in the third degree.
