Work Begins on Highway 80 Construction Project in Columbus, Georgia

COLUMBUS, GA. – Work began on a construction project on U.S. Highway 80 in Columbus, Georgia, according to an online news report from ledger-enquirer.com. The project will install a reduced-conflict U-turn on the highway.*

At the intersection of Highway 80 (Ga. 22) and Macon Road, workers will be installing a reduced-conflict U-turn (RCUT) intersection. RCUTs reduce angle collisions at busy intersection on divided highways by preventing drivers from making left turns or driving across four lanes of traffic for any reason. In the intersection, only right turns are possible, and drivers wanting to travel the opposite direction will have to make use of a special U-turn. The devices have been shown to reduce injury crashes by more than 40 percent and fatal crashes by 70 percent. 

“RCUTs decrease congestion by allowing traffic to flow through the area in all directions, yet they reduce opportunities for collisions by keeping all motorists within the flow of traffic,” said Penny Brooks, Georgia Department of Transportation communications officer. 

Brooks said the project in Columbus will cause closures of the inside lanes on the highway in both directions from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. every day. The project is expected to be completed in the middle of January 2019, weather permitting. Drivers are encouraged to use caution, prepare for delays, and watch out for road workers. 

Columbus is located in Muscogee County, Georgia, and has an estimated population of 194,000. Interstate 185 is a major roadway within Muscogee County, as are U.S. Route 27, U.S. Route 80, and U.S. Route 280.
