Residents in Panola County, TX, Pushing for Safety Improvements to Highway 315

December 08, 2018

PANOLA COUNTY, TX. – According to an online news report from panolawatchman.com, residents of Panola County, Texas, are pushing for safety improvements to Highway 315, after a string of fatal accidents in the last several years.*

Highway 315 is a two-lane highway in Texas. The stretch of highway that runs through Panola County has been the site of 174 vehicle crashes since 2014, seven of which were fatal. So far in 2018, three deadly wrecks have occurred on the highway in Panola County. Residents of the county are trying to convince local and state officials to do something to improve safety on the highway.

One such resident is John Worley. Worley’s mother, Joyce, was tragically killed in a rear-end collision on Highway 315 on May 11, 2014.

“She had been to lunch on Mother’s Day with my brother,” Worley said. “She was driving home, she was making the turn, a right-hand turn off the highway that she had made thousands and thousands of times before, because she lived there her entire life, and a truck, a one-ton truck, hit her car in the rear.”

Worley has joined other members of the community to advocate for a lower speed limit on the highway. Currently, the speed limit is 70 mph. Others, however, want turn lanes on the highway or longer turn lanes or a campaign against distracted driving.

“I know that a lot of people say it’s not the speed, it’s driver error,” Worley said. “And it is driver error, ok? But the problem is, when you’re driving 70 [mph], and you make a mistake, the consequences are far worse than when you’re driving 55 or 60, and you make a mistake.”

The Texas Department of Transportation has been discussing three potential projects for Highway 315, including texturized center lines and shoulder stripes, safety end treatments to all drainage structures, and widening the highway from two lanes to four lanes.
