Roundabout Construction Work Begins at Busy Intersection in Peachtree Corners, GA

November 30, 2018

PEACHTREE CORNERS, GA. – According to an online news story from patch.com, construction work has begun on a roundabout project at a busy intersection in Peachtree Corners, Georgia.*

Peachtree Corners Circle and Medlock Bridge Road in Peachtree Corners is currently a congested T-style intersection that is controlled by a stop sign. The intersection sees a daily traffic count of more than 25,000 vehicles and could use some help in moving cars along. A project was approved to construct a roundabout at the intersection, and work began on the device November 20.

Studies show that roundabouts are safer than intersections with lights or stop signs and prevent more severe accidents by eliminating cross-points.

“Roundabouts promote a continuous flow of traffic in all directions versus a traditional traffic signal that stops at least one direction at all times,” said Greg Ramsey, Public Works director for Peachtree Corners. “The roundabout allows for a greater volume of traffic through an intersection, while minimizing delays, particularly during off peak hours.”

The roundabout proposed for Peachtree Corners Circle and Medlock Bridge Road will feature pedestrian crosswalks and signage to alert drivers to Georgia law requiring all vehicles to stop for pedestrians in crosswalks. Preliminary work will include removal of trees to make room for the roundabout. The construction cost is projected around $1.2 million, which will be paid using SPLOST funds. The roundabout will take about one year to complete.

“The roundabout will be a big improvement for this busy intersection, especially during rush hour,” said Mayor Mike Mason. “The pedestrian safety features are certainly timely, as we expect foot traffic to increase once the city’s Town Center opens next year.”
