Ice and Winter Weather Shuts Down New York Roadways

November 27, 2018

Across the United States, 70 percent of total roadways are located in places that are considered “snowy.” Most Americans live in places where snow is a frequent occurrence.

Ice and snow present dangerous situations for drivers as they cut down on the roadway friction and reduce the maneuverability of vehicles. Drivers travel at slower speeds when they are contending with ice and snow leading to roads having lower traffic capacities. Arterial speeds drop by an average of 30 or 40 percent when the pavement is covered in snow or slush. The risk of being involved in accidents increases in these conditions.

About 24 percent of weather-related vehicle collisions take place when it is icy, slushy, or snowy. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) writes that more than 1,300 people die in these crashes each year while another 116,800 sustain injuries.

Winter weather also increases the costs of roadway maintenance. Operations to control roadway ice and snow are also incredibly costly. On average, local and state agencies spend over $2.3 billion to clear roads and make them safe for drivers during and after winter weather events. Millions of dollars are also spent on repairing infrastructure which suffers damage because of the ice and snow.
