Snow Causes Traffic Delays and Accidents Across America

November 26, 2018 writes that New York City recently had a snowstorm that caused traffic to slow down during evening rush hour. The early snow led to at least seven fatalities across the United States.*

The weather, which included freezing rain, snow, and sleet, hit the South through the Northeast creating dangerous driving conditions and shutting down some schools.

The wind and snow caused tree branches to fall into the road. Police recommended that people stay inside and avoid using the roadways. The Port Authority Bus Terminal was overcrowded, and commuters were advised to find other transportation. The building was packed with people and officials were urging them to take a train or ferry because the buses were struggling in the weather and because accidents and bridge closures were causing major delays in traffic. The buses had not been prepared for the storm and were not yet using snow chains. Some of the buses were forced to pull to the side of the road creating additional problems and delays.

In Mississippi, the snowstorm led to a tour bus sliding and overturning on Wednesday afternoon in a crash that killed two people and injured44. In Arkansas, three people died in accidents on the icy roadways. One person died in a weather-related accident in Ohio, and another was reported in Indiana.

In Philadelphia, 5 inches of snow blanked suburban streets, andthe roads became covered in ice, which caused a number of vehicles to slide off the road.

The weather led to NASA being forced to reschedule the launching of an unmanned rocket that was to be sent to the International Space Station.
