University of North Georgia Receives State Grant for Safe Driving Program

November 23, 2018

DAHLONEGA, GA. – According to an online report from ung.edu, the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety has awarded the University of North Georgia with a grant for a safe driving program.

The grant totals $7,750 and marks the tenth time UNG has received funding from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety for its Young Adult Program. The program strives to use peer education, educational speakers, and seminars for prevention of young adult vehicle crashes and fatalities.

UNG uses the money each year to create accident simulations for its students. In the simulations, students can experience the effects of a rollover accident and a drunk driving accident.

“The rollover simulator is a car with dummies in it,” said Meri-Leigh Smith, health educator at UNG. “Some dummies fall out of the car. Some are ejected. All of it reiterates the importance of wearing a safety belt.”

The rollover simulation took place in the fall semester, and the DUI simulation will take place in the spring semester. The DUI simulation will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on March 4 at the Hoag Student Center Patio on the Dahlonega Campus of UNG.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for teenagers in the United States. In 2015, a total of 2,333 teens between the ages of 16 and 19 were killed in vehicle crashes in the United States. This equates to six teen deaths every day due to motor vehicle injuries. More than 235,000 teenagers of the same age were treated in emergency departments in 2016 for injuries sustained in motor vehicle crashes.
