BIBB COUNTY, GA- Macon.com writes that the sheriff’s office in Bibb County is searching for a driver where o struck and killed one person on Sunday, November 11, 2018. The victim, 51-year-old John Thomas was found dead on Ocmulgee East Boulevard at around 1:35 p.m., but according to the coroner, the victim had likely been struck hours prior to being found.*

The spokesperson for the sheriff’s office, Linda Howard stated that the victim’s body could be seen from the roadway and that he was found a little south of I-16. She did not have a time estimate for when the accident took place.

Police are seeking information from the public about theincident. Anyone who knows anything about the accident is being asked to contact the Macon Regional Crimestoppers.

According to a report conducted by the AAA, hit-and-run crashes are on the rise in the United States. In some areas, the numbers are so high that it is considered to be an epidemic. Thousands of people are being killed yearly in accidents in which the driver leaves the scene.

Cyclists and pedestrians are the most likely victims in hit-and-run accidents. When a driver leaves the scene after striking a person, they leave the victim in a vulnerable position. In many cases, the only person available to seek help for the victim is the person who struck the victim.

In many cases, drivers who leave the scene of a crash do so because they had violated another law. These drivers may be under the influence of alcohol or driving without a license.

States have responded to the growing number of fleeing drivers by increasing penalties for hit-and-run accidents.
