According to a report conducted by the AAA, hit-and-run crashes are on the rise in the United States. In some areas, the numbers are so high that it is considered to be an epidemic. Thousands of people are being killed yearly in accidents in which the driver leaves the scene.
Cyclists and pedestrians are the most likely victims in hit-and-run accidents. When a driver leaves the scene after striking a person, they leave the victim in a vulnerable position. In many cases, the only person available to seek help for the victim is the person who struck the victim.
In many cases, drivers who leave the scene of a crash do so because they had violated another law. These drivers may be under the influence of alcohol or driving without a license.
States have responded to the growing number of fleeing drivers by increasing penalties for hit-and-run accidents.
