Sandy Springs Police Work to Help Drivers with Flat Tires and to Safely Clear Accidents

November 19, 2018

SANDY SPRINGS, GA- Reporternewspapers.net writes that the Sandy Springs police have a program that enlists officers to serve in Traffic Response Vehicles. The officers respond to accidents and aid the involved vehicles in getting off the roadway. These officers help stop the traffic around the accident site.*

These police officers also aid motorists with tasks such as changing flat tires, refilling gas tanks, and jumping car batteries. The program began in 2015, andthe officers have responded to thousands of emergency calls.

Georgia’s Highway Emergency Response Operator (HERO) program works in a similar way, but only covers interstates, state routes, and major roadways. The Sandy Springs program works as a complementary program that helps cover more of the state’s local roads.

The officers are also able to write traffic tickets and arrest people, which makes it different from the HERO program.

The officers carry emergency gear intended to help in the event of car-related emergencies. The trucks carry water, crime scene tape, tow chains, gas cans, traffic cones, tools for making basic repairs, cables, and the “Jaws of Life.”

Only two officers serve on the team. These officers have assisted in 639 accidents, distributed hundreds of gallons of gas, replaced flat tires in hundreds of vehicles and jumped 129 car batteries all within one year. The officers also issued 794 traffic citations and made 33 arrests.

While people initially had doubts about the program, the city now plans to buy a new truck to replace one of the officer’s vehicles. The officers say that the success of the program depends on the officers working in the trucks. These officers have to have special knowledge about car maintenance and be willing to assist people in need.
