Tennessee Highway Safety Office Launching Distracted Driving Campaign

November 07, 2018

CHATTANOOGA, TN. – November 2, 2018 (newschannel9.com) According to an online news report from newschannel9.com, the Tennessee Highway Safety Office is launching a campaign to crack down on distracted driving in the state. The campaign will begin later in the month.*

The campaign, called Operation Incognito, will begin on November 13 and is designed to keep drivers from performing distracting tasks behind the wheel, like texting or making phone calls. The campaign is part of National Traffic Incident Response Week, which runs from November 11 to November 17.

The Tennessee Highway Safety Office developed Operation Incognito as an extension of the state’s fourth distracted driving initiative, which is known as the “bus tour.” Organizers hope the campaign educates the public on the dangers of distracted driving and the state’s “Move Over” law.

“The primary focus of Operation Incognito is to reduce distracted driving, serious injury traffic crashes, and fatalities,” said Tennessee Highway Safety Office Director Vic Donoho. “A secondary focus will include saturations of high-risk construction and utility maintenance zones to increase awareness.”

Many states have started increasing response regarding distracted driving. In July, Georgia implemented its Hands Free Georgia Act, which bans the use of all hand-held electronics in the state. The law has so far been touted as a success in reducing instances of distracted driving and traffic crashes in the state. Georgia was the 16th state to pass this type of legislation, and more states are looking into the possibility of introducing similar laws.
